ABOUT DENIER A mare is not usually as hard on blankets as most geldings(usually the geldings friends play and bite the blanket in the paddocks) For mares usually 400 denier nylon or 600 denier polyester is fine. For geldings, 800 denier nylon or 1200 denier polyester is usually required for normal durability. Problem horses may require stronger blankets of 1200 to 1600 denier nylon. Good blankets are made with materials that are woven in a way that prevents easy tearing. Some material in premium blankets is almost twice as strong as the material used in less expensive blankets, each at the same denier. Most manufacturers sew the straps and closures with a fairly strong thread. Super strong thread is rarely used, since it would not yield, should the horse get the blanket caught on a fixed object or get the blanket partly off and tangled in the legs. The idea is that for safety, most horse people feel that the parts of a blanket can be sewn back on a lot easier than the parts of a horse; therefore, super strong threads are rarely used to sew on straps etc.. |
